Kenyan President announces dates for flights resumption

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced the resumption dates of air services that were suspended to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Addressing the nation from State House, President Kenyatta said: “We are going to be starting the domestic flights and this is what we will use as a trial in the next couple of days. We are opening the inter-county lockdown.”

The “phased reopening” as announced by President Kenyatta will see domestic flights resuming from the 15th of July and international flights will return from the first of August 2020. Kenya becomes the second East African country to announce 01 August as the date for the resumption of international flights.

Air services will resume under strict conformity to all applicable heath guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Civil Aviation guidelines. At the end of June, a delegation of Kenyan Civil Aviation Authorities, Ministry of Health and Government Officials visited Jomo Kenyatta International Airports to assess the progress that had been done in preparing the reopening of the airport.

Meanwhile, Kenyan low-cost carrier Jambo Jet on Monday 6 July announced it has been conducting training flights to ensure their pilots remain current. The LCC has now confirmed the airline is ready to resume flight operations.
