Nigeria Air Services To Resume On 8 July 2020

Nigerian Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika has announced the resumption of domestic flights from the 8th of July 2020. This comes after the country’s airports had been closed for close to three months in the wake of the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus.

Speaking on his Twitter account, Mr. Sirika said: “I am glad to announce that Abuja & Lagos airports will resume domestic operations on the 8th of July, 2020. Kano, Port Harcourt, Owerri and Maiduguri to resume on the 11th. Other airports on the 15th. Date for international to be announced in due course. Bear with us, please.”

Lagos and Abuja airports will open for domestic flights following a dry run simulation exercise of the level preparedness done by the Authorities on 27 June 2020. A number of measures have been put in place to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus.

will be required to wear a nose and face-covering mask, observe social distancing, regularly sanitise their hands at several points in the airport terminal. Unlike before the pre-pandemic period, only passengers are now permitted inside the airports.

Addressing a meeting on the Nigerian Senate Committee on Aviation that was attended by various stakeholders in the Nigerian aviation industry, Minister Sirika said, “All VIPs traveling will access the airport alone.” This is part of the drastic measures that have been introduced to curb the spread of COVID19.

Following the Minister`s announcement, a number of airlines have announced plans to resume flights under the new strict health guidelines. Both Azman Air, Air Peace will resume flights on 8 July 2020 while the Uyo based airline Ibom Air announced the resumption of service between Lagos and Abuja.  The airline further stated: “On Wednesday 15 July, our services between Uyo and Lagos and Uyo and Abuja will restart.”

Meanwhile, Air Peace has announced another repatriation flight from Lagos to Delhi, India set for 7 July 2020. During the lockdown period Air Peace have performed a number of intercontinental repatriation flights to China, Middle East and recently from London’s Heathrow Airport.
