AFRICA TOMORROW SHAPES AFRICA’S REOPENING

Africa Tomorrow held a one-day Virtual Conference “Reinvent Resilience in Travel, Hospitality and Aviation.” The conference held on the 21st of July 2020, attracted at least 140 speakers from the industry and was aimed at bringing together various players to share ideas on how to recover from the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. Just African Aviation spoke to Jon Howell, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of AviaDev Ltd about the conference.

Below are the excerpts from that interview.

JAA: Your overall comment on the event, how successful was it?

J.H: We delivered over 50 sessions across 8 hours and brought 140+ speakers to the stage on a platform that is new to almost all in our community. It was a big challenge and we were aware that internet connectivity may be an issue for some of the attendees, but we coped with that.

JAA: How many people registered?

J.H: 1400 registered and 1000 attended.

The View From The Clouds. Africa’s Aviation Leaders

JAA: Did you meet your objectives?

J.H: Yes. Our objective was to provide a positive event for African aviation, tourism and hospitality. We provided a platform for engagement, idea sharing and somewhere we could see each other and network “as normal.” I’m sure the event allowed people to expand their networks and learn plus it was free for all Africans to attend so we have provided a valuable learning platform for students across Africa and the World.

JAA: It is going to be an annual event?

J.H: We are not sure yet. The events industry has been turned upside down with the inability to physically meet together and so we have been quick to adapt and move into the virtual space. Whilst these events are valuable, I feel that there is no substitute for real meetings and the appetite for these to return will grow back stronger. We are committed to deliver AviaDev Africa in Madagascar next June so that is our plan at present, but never say never.

What’s Next For The Next Generation.

JAA: Will you continue hosting physical events post pandemic, e.g. Aviadev Africa?

J.H: Yes. As explained above.

A number of sessions were held during the day and here are some of them for you to catch up on;
